The second season of The Last of Us was revealed in a new trailer for upcoming HBO shows and appears to be a departure from the original games.

Based on the hit PlayStation franchise, the first season followed survivors Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they navigate a post-apocalyptic global invasion through fungal zombies.

At the end of the first nine-episode outing, Joel makes the decision to save Ellie from certain death, despite her immunity to the virus that makes her humanity the last hope.

The second season will be access to the video game franchise, released for consoles in 2020.

Pedro and Bella reprise their roles along with newcomer Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac Dixon and Isabela Merced as Ellie’s love Dina.

Schitt’s Creek favorite Catherine O’Hara will also join in an undisclosed role.

One of his scenes was largely featured in the brief trailer for the second season, which was included in a thrilling reel of HBO exhibits that aired Sunday.

In the scene, her character wonders about Ellie and asks Joel, “Did you hurt her?”

To which Joël confesses through tears: “I kept it. “

Joel’s passionate resolve to save Ellie from the doctors who supposedly killed her to cure the cordyceps infection is the source of much of the confrontation in the second game.

However, the trailer already deviates significantly from the original story as, in the game, Joel confesses to his brother Tommy, played in the series by Gabriel Luna.

While the trailer already heralds massive deviations from the game’s narrative, enthusiasts are keeping an eye on the direction of the second installment of the HBO adaptation.

The exact release date has yet to be confirmed, but the second season is scheduled for 2025 and is expected to consist of seven episodes. A third season is also planned, but has already been officially ordered.

Along with the trailer for The Last of Us, HBO audiences were treated to a clip from the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
