Charles Hardin Holley, professionally as Buddy Holly, died alongside fellow rock and roll ritchie Valens and J. P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson on February 3, 1959.
All three died in a small plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, en route to Moorhead, Minnesota.
Its pilot, Roger Peterson, 21, also died when his 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft crashed minutes after takeoff in Mason City, Iowa.
February 3, 2021 marks the 62nd anniversary of the accident.
Holly, Valens and Richardson went through legendary singer-songwriter Don McLean about 12 years after the accident.
McLean’s hit song “American Pie” in 1971 about the horror of the February accident.
Some of the lyrics to the 8-minute, 36-second song were: “But February made me tremble. With each and every newspaper he delivered. Bad news at the door. I couldn’t take another step.
“I don’t if I cried. When I read his widowed girlfriend’s story. Something touched me deeply. The day the music died. “
Photographs from the destination turn scene show the frame of one of the 3 singers killed in the single-engine plane crash.
The photo seems to show one of the men face down after the plane crashed into a snowy farm.
Another photo shows debris strewn over the scene of the turn of fate and the red and white Beechcraft Bonanza mutilated aircraft.
Two months after the accident, a farmer discovered Holly’s belongings, adding her lensless frames, a watch bracelet, a watch and dice.
Other remaining pieces are the idea of being the back plate of Big Bopper’s watch and a Zippo lighter.
Items collected at the destination turn site were placed in an envelope with handwritten names of deceased persons.
According to a new press release, the Buddy Holly Center in Lubbock, Texas, “will offer free entry on Wednesday, February 3, 2021 and broadcast all the screening hours of Larry Holley’s documentary friend Holly The Buddy I Knew. “
Holly, who was born in Lubbock, Texas, a country singer before switching style to rock-and-roll.
