President Biden will speak with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos on Friday, the first in-depth interview with a reporter since his shaky performance in last week’s debate, which alarmed Democrats about his continued viability as a candidate.
Stephanopoulos, who has interviewed Biden in the past, is expected to record the interview on Friday, when the president is on the crusade. The network said it would air portions of the interview on its nightly newscast.
Biden’s advisers have been under a lot of pressure from Democrats and other primary supporters to force the president to answer questions, in an impromptu setting, about his performance in the debate. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a former House speaker, said Tuesday that Biden talks to reporters, and Mika Brzezinski, the MSNBC host who is a staunch Biden ally, insisted the same.
In the days following the debate, during which Biden struggled to end his sentences and appeared dazed on stage, speaking at rallies and personal fundraisers using a teleprompter. On Monday, he spoke to reporters at the White House about the Supreme Court’s recent decision. He spoke about presidential immunity, but left without answering questions about his fitness and the long term of his candidacy.
Stephanopoulos is an experienced interviewer who conducts many of ABC’s interviews with important political figures. He is also a very sensible adviser to Bill Clinton’s White House.
