Far from being the highlight of the career, Peebles once said that the aftermath of Lennon’s “Bleged My Life” interview led to a breakup
Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Andy Peebles, who conducted John Lennon’s last interview, died in a time before he became a new performer, aged 76.
Host Mike Read shared the news about X on Sunday morning (March 23), writing, “devastated to hear news of our Andy Peebles.
“He was about to register in Heritage [the only Map -based music program in the United Kingdom]. We recorded Fored Radio 1 together. He knew his internal music and outside. “
He continued of the cricket fan and sporting experience: “Roll up your bat and a long break in the pavilion. We recently had lunch with DLT and Adrian Juste. Great Runs. “
Peebles’ circle of relatives broke the news of his death to the BBC.
Born in 1948, Peebles began his career as a nightclub DJ over the last 60 years before joining BBC Radio Manchester in 1973, when he also hosted the BBC World Service.
He joined BBC Radio 1 in 1978, hosting the evening show between 8pm. and 10 p. m. and stars interviewing, David Bowie, Paul Simon, Debbie Harry, Cliff Richard, Phil Collins and Roger Taylor.
Among his most memorable career moments, the last recorded interview with John Lennon on December 6, 1980.
Peebles, who conducted the interview only 48 hours before the death of the musician, on his flight from New York City when Lennon murdered outside the doors of his building in New York City.
During the conversation, Lennon, who had not spoken to the media for the past few years, opened up the Beatles’ breakup, their tense appointments with the U. S. government and their plans for the future.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this nervous in my life,” Peebles told CBS. “Not only the idol had grown, but the organization and everything they had done. “
Far from being the highlight, however, Peebles later said that the interview hit the breaking point, as he was found giving live tributes on radio and television while under the news.
“I lost all sense of the next day,” he told the Daily Mail. “It destroyed my life and slowed me down. The obsession almost drove me crazy.
“I tormented myself with the guilt of Survivor. Il was the author of the most brilliant music of the twentieth century and I will never forget it. He was nobody. “
He maintained a friendship with Ono and interviewed her in 1983 in Tokyo, Japan.
The interview has later become the issue of 2020 Lennon documentary last weekend, directed through Brian Grant. The film released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Lennon’s death.
Meanwhile, a series of photographs taken of Lennon and Yoko Ono taken the interview with BBC manufacturer Paul Williams was auctioned off in 2015.
Tributes on social networks came to the view of listeners and broadcasting companions.
Veteran broadcaster Tony Blackburn tweeted: “I’m sorry to hear that fellow Radio 1 DJ when I am there Andy Peebles has passed away. He’s a captivating guy and a wonderful broadcaster. Very unhappy news.
