It’s not unusual to make unforeseen discoveries after moving to a new place, yet one couple was horrified by how shocking their new home looked.
In a now-viral post on Reddit, user /u/kylemacabre said the space he and his wife recently purchased had a “air raid shelter in the yard. ” He joked that the shelter looked like something out of a horror movie and that he didn’t need to think about what could be there.
The 34-year-old Reddit author, who lives in New Mexico, told Newsweek that he “knew about the shelter” when he made an offer on the property, but he didn’t go in until they moved there on May 1. They enjoyed everything in the house, in the garden, and they didn’t need it to interfere with their dream home.
He said, “My spouse hired at a nearby university, so I reached out to meet with a genuine real estate agent and make a layover in some spaces. The space is in very good condition. It’s the most productive I’ve seen all weekend, so far. There’s just one problem: there’s a terrifying bomb shelter.
“The first thing that came to mind was this movie The Barbarian, or this scene from The Silence of the Lambs, where Jodie Foster is in Buffalo Bill’s basement and you see the decomposing corpse in the bathtub. I didn’t go down that day, as you can see. I could think. imagine. “
According to documents and a building permit, the shelter was built in the 1980s and includes a giant underground room, a shower and a toilet.
Finally, /u/kylemacabre was brave enough to go downstairs and see what was hidden inside. He said he felt “very nervous” as he walked down the stairs, fearing what might meet him.
“Overall, my biggest fear is the state it’s in,” he said. “I’m pretty sure there will be a lot of rain there and it will be disgusting. I mentally prepare myself for the worst: maybe a few inches of cloudy water on the ground or a dirty floor. ” old mattress Luckily, it was a little scary and there were no toxic bugs or snakes there. ”
Now that he knows the shelter is a horror movie in the works, the Redditor plans to turn it into a music room. He intends to install a battery and amplifiers to take advantage of the soundproof area.
“I actually need it to feel less like an underground concrete box. I made up my mind as soon as I saw the space, because I had dreamed of having a music room,” he declared.
After making the discovery and entering the shelter, /u/kylemacabre posted several photos on Reddit in July. The post, which horrified many social media users, garnered more than 31,000 upvotes and 3,500 comments in just a few days.
The Redditor told Newsweek that he’s taking the combined reaction online “with a grain of salt. “
He added, “I wrote about this because some Redditors pointed out poison gas dangers that I hadn’t considered, and others pointed out structural issues. This encouraged me to touch an inspector and have them examine the walls and ceiling. “
Many commenters insisted that the lawn feature a tornado shelter, while others discussed what they would do with the space.
“It has all the possibilities of a surprising cave/game room/secret room for men,” wrote one user.
“I think a beer or wine cellar would suffice,” added another. “Is it cool and cool in there?”
One commenter said, “Man, I’d turn it into a booth or even a guest room or something. “
